The Gambia Network of Journalists
against Money Laundering is a national chapter of the Network of Journalists
against Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism in West Africa.
The idea of forming such a sub-regional
network and its national chapters was initiated by the Inter-Governmental
Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA). GIABA
is a specialized institution of ECOWAS
that is responsible for the prevention and control of money laundering and
terrorist financing in the region.
The sub-regional media network was formed on 27th
May 2010 at the Shehu Musa Yar' Adua Conference Centre in Abuja, Nigeria during
a GIABA world press conference and open house and interactive session with
media executives from West Africa and other dignitaries from the sub-regional
body.
It includes senior editors and
journalists from Ghana, Nigeria, Gambia, Liberia, and Sierra Leone among other
West African countries to form a regional media alliance to wage massive
crusade against money laundering and terrorism financing.
The establishment of the media network is in
cognizance of the crucial role of the media in the fight against money
laundering and financing of terrorism.
The aims and objectives of the Network include:
ü to
complement the efforts of GIABA;
ü to build strong
alliance between GIABA, the media and other stakeholders to raise awareness
about the threats posed by the activities of money launderers and the financing
of terrorist activities;
ü to build
the capacity of journalists to report well on issues pertaining to money
laundering and terrorism financing;
ü to
bring together a broad section of the media from across the country under one
group with the aim of identifying and tracking down ML&FT activities within
The Gambia and West Africa at large;
ü to
encourage journalists to intensify efforts in reporting on all issues relating
to money laundering and terrorism.
